STUDENT SPOTLIGHT:
Josh Silvestre, Medical Assistant Program Graduate
Joshua Silvestre came from a troubled background with no direction, no goals, no dreams. As a homeless young man, Josh sought housing at the Mather Community Campus, a program for homeless families and single adults who believe that employment is an essential component in building a new life. From there, he was referred to the Charles Jones Career & Education Center. His motivation was his grandmother who said, "Josh, when you look in the mirror, what do you see? Because I see nothing."
Josh enrolled in the Medical Assisting program. His attendance was excellent, and he began learning more than he ever thought possible. As a Medical Assisting student, he proudly wore his uniform every day as he gained in knowledge, skills, and confidence.
After enrolling and experiencing success, he went to his grandmother and asked if she could see him. She replied, "I think I'm beginning to see you."
Josh enjoyed school, and before long was gaining not only in knowledge, but in confidence. He became President of the Student Council and participated in school beautification projects, planning the graduation, and building leadership skills. Along with other Student Council officers, he attended Legislative Advocacy Day at the capitol, and enjoyed meeting and interacting with elected officials.
After completing the 42-week onsite component of the Medical Assisting program, Josh was placed in an externship at Sutter Roseville Family Practice, where he not only thrived, but was ultimately offered a permanent position.
Joshua Silvestre was a speaker at the Spring 2008 graduation at which time he told his story to a packed house. At the end of his speech, he asked his grandmother to stand and be acknowledged. The pride in her eyes and the smile on her face confirmed that yes, there was no doubt that she could see him now.
